We departed by luxury bus on
noon, Thursday, October 3, and proceeded to Adare. We stayed in a hotel
there four nights. Monday, October 7, we journeyed to Killareny.
County Kerry is one of the most scenic sections in Ireland.
Killarney is surrounded by McGillicuddy's Reeks and beautiful lakes dot
the ever present green, green, GREEN Irish landscape.
GOLF SCHEDULE
In creating our golf schedule, several factors were considered; course reputation, course difficulty, course type and distance from hotels. Our itinerary is a blend of parkland and seaside layouts. Difficulty is mostly determined by weather. All have world-wide recognition, and no course is more than 1 1/4 hours from our hotel, except Old Head, which is certainly worth the drive.
Tralee
An Arnold Palmer design, it is a linksland layout. Arnold's quote "I have never come across a piece of land so ideally suited for a golf course, we have one of the greatest links here."
(6500 yards, par 71)
Waterville
It is located on the Southwestern tip of County Kerry. All visiting professionals, including Mark O'Meara, Tiger Woods, Payne Stewart, Ray Floyd and Sam Snead have praised its perfection. The land sets against Ballinskeligs Bay and roams through giant sand dunes.
Old Head at Kinsale
This has been labeled the "greatest plot of golfing ground on earth." The course is atop 150 acres of rock promontory that juts into the Atlantic Ocean.
Ballybunion
This is one of Tom Watson's favorites. He said, "Ballybunion is a course on which golf architects should live and play before they design and build." Old Tom Morris designed it. The 11th, 440 yards, par 4 is terrific. The course also meanders through dunes and is against the Atlantic Ocean shore.
Adare Manor
Owned by American Thomas Kane, this parkland beauty, just south of Shannon, is so memorable.
The magnificent Adare Manor castle provides a backdrop to this idyllic location.
Lahinch
Frequently called the "St. Andrews of Ireland." (6500 yards, par 72)
Killarney Fish and Golf Club
This club has three courses. We will play Mahoney's Point, which is most famous. After the rough and tumble of the seasides, the tranquility and inland beauty will give a more gentle pace.
